Any warning on debt consolidation?

I'm having money trouble, like most of America. I needed to put up with several surgeries without help from strength insurance. I now have over 50,000$ within debt. I had planned to slowly pay it backbone as that was the price of having my surgery, my energy, but due to complications from said surgery, I'm having a hard time finding work to even set off paying it back. (I had to depart my job for the surgery, another complication I didn't plan). It's spiraled out of my control, and I'm no longer sure how to get things support on track. I need to look into debt help, but not sure where on earth to start, or who to trust. Does anyone have any advice?
